PROAKTIV.IO's founder, Michel Tagliati, shares insights on metabolic health and the healthcare needed to help patients with insulin resistance.
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas when we eat. It regulates energy metabolism and allows the body to use sugar, or glucose, as an energy source. Insulin is transported to the body’s so-called target tissues – muscles, fat tissue, and liver – where it binds sugar and thereby lowers blood sugar to normal levels after a meal.
Insulin resistance means that the effect of insulin in the body is impaired. More insulin than normal is needed to transfer glucose from the blood to the cells. With elevated insulin resistance, the insulin level does not decrease as it should, and the body is constantly trying to store energy instead of using it.
Insulin resistance is measured with a so-called Kraft test. You start by fasting for 12 hours and then drinking glucose, after which blood samples are taken at regular intervals to see how quickly your insulin levels change. The test takes place over a morning, and together with basic blood tests and body composition, a treatment plan is created.
